Let’s Talk About The Death Of Classical Music

Let’s talk a little about the death of classical music. Because nothing pushes my buttons more than to suggest that classical music is dead. It’s my humble opinion that “classical” music has just adapted a new name, place, and time. It’s just as relevant as Adele, and just as emotionally potent.

Now I use air quotes around the word “classical” because it’s such a misnomer. True Classical Music, with a capital C, refers to the music produced exclusively in the time period from about 1750-1820. It’s when people like Mozart and Haydn were active. Now, I love me a little Mozart as much as the next guy, but that music is old. It’s great, but it’s very, very old. We live in a modern day society, right? And there are still some orchestras around playing this “classical” music? So where are our Mozarts and Haydns? Where are the people producing music that speaks to us as a modern generation? And the answer…well it requires a little history lesson.

Near the beginning of the Twentieth Century, composers started to get a little ambitious. They were fed up with the old style and how music followed exact patterns, so they started to push the boundaries of music more and more. This meant a lot of things (levels of complexity in the music started to pick up, composers started doing some weird things) but suffice to say, listeners’ reactions were all across the charts. Some people cheered on this new music, others rioted at the premieres (See: Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring). Music really started to push some buttons, go farther and father out, and the audience started to deplete a bit.

The answer to this in the 60s and 70s was a movement called minimalism. This music favored repetitive structures, a unifying process to create a piece, and mixed instrumentation (that is, whoever the composers could find to play their music). The sound owed a lot to rock music, african music, and eastern thought. The idea was that you could experience music in a very different time structure―something that hinted at a much more primal and basic human level. Repetition was a natural human sensation that could be exploited through music.

It’s also worth noting the artists that aren’t considered to be composers in the classical tradition. This means people and groups like Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Bjork, and the Dirty Projectors. These folks all owe a lot to this weird classical tradition, and, I would argue, are some of the great composers of our time. Songs like The Age of Adz, by Sufjan Stevens are just great demonstrators of this.
Besides the obvious instrumentation that owes itself to the classical realm, Stevens’ whole aesthetic is informed by the shifting timbres, experimentation, and the violent energy that modern classical music has.

To mention these artists and not mention their backup groups would quite a travesty. These artists, like Sufjan, often enlist help from musicians who are also active in the classical community. See Colin Stetson or yMusic as great examples. Stetson has toured and recorded with Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, TV on the Radio, Yeasayer, and a whole host of other "non-classical" groups.

The Justin Bieber Of The Classical World Will Play A Concert At The Royal Albert Hall

YouTube star and virtuoso pianist Valentina Lisitsa signs record deal and will play a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Valentina Lisitsa, who has been playing piano since the age of 3, began her rise to Internet stardom five years ago, when she posted a Rachmaninov etude nicknamed "Little Red Riding Hood" on the Internet.

Perhaps in part bolstered by her flashing long fingers and blonde tresses, that video clip has had 1.5 million views, while her Beethoven "Moonlight Sonata" has garnered almost 3 million views and numerous other videos of hers have viewership of a half million and up.

Some classical music clips on the Internet, even by famous performers, have viewership in the low thousands.

Lisitsa, who had been pursuing her career without a professional manager or promoter, attributed her success to "word of mouth" and said she thought the Internet had created a new way to reach the public.

"If people pretend to be something they're not, people can feel that in the digital age," she told Reuters in a telephone interview. "They know when they are being sold something."

Lisitsa, who trained at the Kiev Conservatory, said: “I could not have done this without all my online fans around the world. Their reactions tell me every day that I am doing the right thing and that’s the best reward for my hard work. Now I want to say thank you and give them a great concert live and online.”

Jasper Hope, Chief Operating Officer of the Royal Albert Hall, said: “Valentina is a force of nature and an extraordinary talent. I don’t know anybody else who has done this before.”

Although she will now be playing in one of the world's most renowned venues, it won't be her first London gig. Last October, she played a concert at St Mary's Church, Perivale, near Ealing. The concert, at the small 12th-century church, was attended by around 130 people who paid £10 (wine included) for the special fundraiser. She used the church piano and the creaky old piano stool giving a dazzling display that included an encore featuring Ave Maria.

Lisitsa fans will be able to vote online to decide what she will play in the slightly grander setting of the Royal Albert Hall.

Northern Sinfonia Has Built A Distinctive Reputation As A Fresh Thinking, Versatile Orchestra

Northern Sinfonia
Northern Sinfonia is Classic FM’s Orchestra in North-East England and at The Sage Gateshead.

Northern Sinfonia, orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, has built a distinctive reputation as a fresh thinking, versatile orchestra, performing repertoire spanning three centuries and regularly commissioned new work.

“The Sage Gateshead has become one of the world’s most admired centres formusic and Northern Sinfonia has raised its game to match.” Richard Morrison, The Times

The orchestra’s work includes concerts, broadcasts, recordings, national and international touring with its Music Director Thomas Zehetmair, Principal Conductors Simon Halsey, John Wilson and Mario Venzago and guest artists.

It can be hard to separate the art from the life of Carlo Gesualdo, music's most notorious madrigalist and double murderer. The Australian composer Brett Dean believes that Gesualdo's anguished harmonies and homicidal instincts were inextricably linked: his rivetingly unorthodox piece Carlo is a form of musical biography for strings, tape and sampler, in which the souls of the composer and his victims seem to be shouting to get out.

Dean's work enfolds recorded examples of Gesualdo's vocal music within a shady string texture whose quick, dynamic flashes are reminiscent of a blade carving through the darkness of a Caravaggio painting. There are few occasions in music that can be described as genuinely frightening: yet when the electronically treated susurrations of the original madrigal burst from the speakers, it was as if the Northern Sinfonia had been joined on stage by a poltergeist. There's a similarly arresting effect towards the end of Mendelssohn's Reformation symphony No 5, an uneven and underperformed piece, which unexpectedly musters its forces into a massive, contrapuntal exhortation of the Lutheran choraleEin Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott. Thomas Zehetmair ensured that the early movements' curious mix of grave spiritualism and frolicking folk dances just about held together, but the cathartic arrival of the chorale sounded as if the orchestra had suddenly become possessed by the spirit of JS Bach.

Northern Sinfonia musicians are part of The Sage Gateshead’s wide ranging Learning & Participation programme, which offers opportunities for everyone to make music of all kinds, whatever their age or ability. Northern Sinfonia also has an associated award-winning youth orchestra, Young Sinfonia, and is joined for both performance and recording by Northern Sinfonia Chorus.

Projects away from the classical mainstream have included working with the Pet Shop Boys at a shipyard in North East England, a concert with Sting performing brand new orchestrations of his hits, and being invited by harpist and striking singer Joanna Newsom to join her UK tour launching her critically acclaimed album Ys.

Northern Sinfonia is proud to be Classic FM’s Orchestra in the North East.

Johann Pachelbel Composed A Significant Number Of Pieces One Of Them Is The Canon

Johann Pachelbel composed a significant number of pieces, and was very highly regarded within his own lifetime (unlike the great J. S. Bach). While he is perhaps rightly considered inferior to the Baroque giants that were Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel, I am rather curious why we only remember him overwhelmingly for one piece. He was certainly not a one-hit wonder in the 17th century.

The Canon in D major is the only of his compositions known to the general public today or perhaps even to some classical dilettantes. As a great fan of the composer, I wonder why history has forgotten his other great works -- it's almost as if the Canon is played everywhere ad nauseam to compensate for this fact! As charming as the Canon in D minor is (un-romanticised and in moderation), I rather feel that his Chaconne in F minor or Magnificat in C major are of greater artistic merit and better represent the man's finest work.

Now, before I post the celebrated Youtube video of a version of the work which I rather like, note the following:

Originally written in 1700 (elsewhere given as early as 1680) as a short, fast piece for three violins and basso continuo, the Baumgartner recording set the pace for outlandish arrangements of the work by slowing it down to about a third its original tempo.

Canon in D

"arguably the most widely used, recorded and recognizable instrumental work of all time."

I shan't argue with that, but I am curious as to how it got that way. MyCYCLOPEDIA (sic) of MUSIC and MUSICIANS, edited by Oscar Thompson , third edition, revised and enlarged, of 1944, gives ten lines on the composer but doesn't mention the Canon in D. or more properly, Canon and gigue, for 3 violins & continuo in D major, T. 337. A canon is of course a type of contrapuntal composition once popular, in which the theme is imitated by a second voice at an interval, and more voices after that if you like, though as with most things in the world it is a little more complicated than its one-line explanation. And a gigue is a jig. Here's a list of over 500 other works by the composer.

And that's the respectful version we're talking about. There are hideous disco and techno beat renditions out there.

Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706)Johann Pachelbel was an acclaimed composer of the middle-Baroque period, and is regarded as one of the most important composers of the period, for his contributions to the development of the choral prelude and fugue. He was a prominent German organist and teacher, and of the many works he composed, “Canon in D major” is by far his most famous. It is technically sophisticated, merging several different musical forms; however, it is the only Canon Pachelbel wrote, and perhaps unrepresentative of his work.

What would Mr. Pachelbel think about it? I wonder if you stop caring when you're dead, or if there really is an afterlife and God lets you in on the Cosmic Joke and you just spend the rest of Eternity laughing. Who knows? I suspect Pachelbel would be too horrified by US to even get around to considering what we'd done with this canon out of all the canons he wrote. Nevertheless, this is Taiwanese Guitar virtuoso Jerry C. playing it (in one of the most popular videos on Youtube over the last couple of years). Of course it is no longer technically speaking a 'canon,' and whether the dramatic key shift at 3.53, creating the modern 'bridge' that facilitates its conversion into a rock anthem, originates here or in the work of a slick arranger in some other version, I do not pretend to know and haven't the time to find out. But this kid sure can play.

The Classical Violin Music Has The Unique Ability To Convey Emotion

Classical Violin
The history of the violin is a story of an astonishing and exciting instrument. The violin is the backbone of the symphonic orchestra. It is the most important component of any ensemble. The famous orchestrator Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov said that composers should learn to write for the violin before anything else. The first modern violins started appearing in the 16th century, in Italy. They were stronger than any string instruments that had come before, which gave the new instrument a beautiful singing tone.

The violins were still different from ones played today though. The entire violin was shorter and stouter, and had gut strings. The violin was originally considered a crude instrument, unworthy of being played. But during the 17th and 18th centuries musical giants such as Vivaldi, Mozart, and Monteverdi popularized it enormously in their operas and concerti. This was a turning point in the history of the violin.

By the middle of the 18th century the violin was a hugely important part of chamber music ensembles, often carrying the melody. In the 19th century, the violin's importance and prestige grew with the new Romantic era of music. Dazzling virtuosos like Nicolo Paganini took violin technique to new heights.

As symphonies orchestras got bigger and bigger, more and more violinists were needed to fill out the sound. Modern symphony orchestras usually have two groups of 16 violinists each!Richard Wagner created such dense and complicated violin sounds that many listeners were confused and baffled by his effects.

Classical music dates back to the Baroque era (1600 to 1750) that followed the Renaissance and was subsequently followed by what is known as the classical era. Baroque composers included Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, and many others you've no doubt heard of. It was during this period that music and instrumental performance expanded in both scope and complexity and opera was established as a new musical genre. The violin has the unique ability to convey emotion and is said to produce notes closest to the human voice in tonality.

Classical violin is typically associated with the orchestra and orchestral groups such as the string quartet in which all the members of the instruments family play a part. This instrument family includes the stringed instruments the viola, cello, and double bass and they all play a role in the orchestra. The violin is the real star of the show however and represents the largest number of musicians typically in two sections. The sections are known as first and second and classical composers generally specify the first violins to play the melody and the second are assigned the harmony or other deviations such as playing the melody an octave lower than the first.

Some well known classical violin pieces include:

Tchaikovsky's concerto for violin in D major

Zigeunerweisen by Pablo Sarasate

Three Violin Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach

Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor by Max Christian Friedrich Bruch

Violin Concerto in D major by Ludwig Van Beethoven

Concerto for violin in D major by Johannes Brahms

Although the violin was not initially well accepted as a valued musical instrument, it soon proved to be the showpiece of the orchestra. Into the 1800's many virtuosos proved the instrument worthy of its stature in the orchestra and in the hands of such masters as Paganini and Sarasate, The violin truly had a voice.

Best Approach To Caring For Your Newborns With Classical Music

Classical Music For Newborns
The great Martin Luther once said "Music makes people more gentle and meek, more modest and understanding." The classical music on FirstWhispers CDs unequivocally calms newborn babies - but it has an equally important effect on parents. There probably isn't a single moment when a parent of a newborn is a little worried or apprehensive about being a first time or second time or even third time caregiver. Classical music has such a soothing effect, that when it's played in the background of a stressful situation, we're able to change our apprehensions and our perspectives so that we may calm down. And a calm approach to care giving is undoubtedly the best approach to caring for newborns.

Music has the power to transform any situation to one that invites singing and dance - pleasure and comfort. We've all experienced this magical transformation and those who are exposed to this magic at an early age (like newborns) are lucky to discover this shift, which happens to be one of life's most intriguing moments. We can stop doing everything in an instant just to hear a pleasing combination of notes or to enjoy a hypnotic rhythm. In doing so, we begin to change our behavior - we slow down, we change our breathing, and we succumb to its power.

The human condition is one that affords wondrous appreciation of such power no matter what age we are. Whether we're aged and all knowing or whether we're fresh from the womb - classical music captures us all and ultimately creates an environment conducive to peaceful moments and a shared emotion of happiness. These are the ingredients for an instant bond between parent and child because classical music - a time cherished genre - enters the hearts of those who listen to it. And there could be no better instrument for bonding than that which prompts the hearts of mother, father, and child to beat as one, in sync to beautiful sounds.

There are a few things that you can do to maximize the results of playing classical music for your newborn. When you exercise this type of child rearing, you want to do so in a manner that will facilitate its effects rather than minimize them or eliminate them altogether. One of those things is to play a little of the classical music on FirstWhispers CD when your newborn is rested (not asleep), dry, and fed. Things like a lack of sleep, a wet or soiled diaper, or hunger may distract your little one from fully absorbing all the wonderful sounds that classical music has to offer.

You can also monitor how you react to the music that you play. Babies are well known for being some of the world's greatest imitators. So while you may or may not be aware of it, your newborn will not only watch your behavior and mood toward the music you hear, she may even copy it. Your newborn may learn wonderful lessons from the classical music playing in the background, but she will also learn a few other unintended lessons from your own reaction!

In addition, you don't want to saturate your newborn with the music either. Some parents get a little obsessed with pushing their children into things that they believe will give them a push or an extra advantage down the road. They compete with the Jones's next door. They buy their children expensive computers before the kids can even read or they enroll them in high priced preschools for a hopeful academic edge.

You don't need to carry your efforts that far because it's highly probable that those extremes do more harm than good. Instead of perceiving the above as helpful, young children may perceive them as pressure and when they don't meet the expectations placed upon them, they get discouraged. Keep your efforts light and fun instead to see healthy results - not pressured results.

Find Out The Right Way To Learn Indian Classical Music

Indian Classical Music
India is known for its diverse culture and heritage. Music has always occupied a significant position in the Indian culture. The oldest Hindu scripture: Vedas also mentions about music. Samadeva, one of the four vedas describes music at length. The basis of Indian music is "sangeet". Sangeet is a combination of three different are forms, namely: vocal, instrumental and dance. Raag and Taal form the two most important pillar of Indian music. "Raag comprises of the melodic part of Indian Music while Taal forms the rhythmic aspect.

The rendition of a khayal recital is typically divided into two parts: Bara (great) khayal and Chhota (small) khayal. During bara khayal, the artist is expected to cover a range of subjects, ideally giving importance to all musical elements such as melody, rhythm and technique, with a slow and contemplative beginning to invoke the very mood of the raga. The lyrical as well as melodic content of bara khayal compositions are devotional or romantic, and they are set in vilambit laya (slow tempo).
Bara khayal is followed by a madhya or drut laya (fast tempo) in chhota khayal. Here the artist carries the mood created during the earlier part of the recital to its crescendo. The acceleration is maintained during the performance with increasing complexity of taans and interplay with rhythm. The compositions written for chhota khayal have syllabic text settings appropriate for the faster tempo. The performing ensemble for khayal consists of a lead soloist, an accompanist on a melody producing instrument such as harmonium or sarangi (bowed lute), a tabla (drum) player and one or two tanpura players to provide continuous drone. A possible addition to the basic ensemble would be a supporting singer. The role of the accompanists is to complement the lead vocals by repeating ends of phrases during short breaks.

The other forms of Indian classical vocal music include dhrupad, dhamar, tappa, tarana, thumri, hori and bhajan. Of all, dhrupad is considered to be the oldest classical vocal form. It is generally accompanied by tanpura and pakhawaj. Dhrupad compositions are set in a 12 beat rhythmic cycle. Dhamar compositions are akin to dhrupad and enjoy an identical status. They are set in a 14 beat rhythmic cycle. Because of their structured style of singing, both dhrupad and dhamar do not allow as many elaborate and extempore improvisations as khayal. Tarana is a style consisting of particular syllables woven into rhythmic patterns as a song and it is usually sung in the faster tempo. The creation of this style of singing is believed to have originated to bring out the tantrakari, or the discreteness of instrumental music, in vocal music.

Tappa has its origin in Punjab. Its beauty lies in quick and intricate display of permutations of notes. Thumri is believed to have originated in Uttar Pradesh. It is the lighter form of Indian classical music. Its most distinct feature is the amorous subject matter that picturesquely portrays the play of Lord Krishna with Radha. It can be viewed as an unconstrained form of khayal singing. Hori compositions are mainly sung in the style of thumri and are associated with the festival of hori (the festival of colors). The mood is joyous and playful, illustrating the divine leela of Lord Krishna. Bhajan literally means pray (bhaj) the lord (narayan). Bhajans are devotional songs based on light classical music. It is a popular form of singing today.

However, in the wake, there is a new trend, which has come into existence. It is related to music learning, especially involving the Indian Classical Music. As it has been felt, and rightly so, that the base of any form of music is textual music, Indian bollywood industry acknowledges the same with due respect to it.

Light Music has its base in Indian Classical Music
This is why we witness the stalwarts of light music on our television sets appreciating the Indian Classical Music. No matter it is Daler Mehdi, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Alka Yagnik, or Hariharan, they all firmly believe that it must be understood thoroughly in order to master the basic techniques of music to strengthen ones light music. Now, that is something, which must be taken with due respect and seriousness as it is something, which leads to consolidating ones singing and musical abilities.

Go for the Right Teacher
However, the biggest question arises to identify the right music teacher. Now, that is something, which is challenging. Believe it or not, music basically comprises of various subtle technique that can only be learned in the company of professionals. In fact, there are many music teachers available in the market, however there is dearth of serious and experienced music teachers. It is sad that in many prestigious music institutions the way of teaching is confined to rot and not the understanding of music. Even if you wish to become a ghazal singer, pop singer, Bollywood singer, learning the fundamentals of music is essential.

Do not Flout the Fundamentals of Music
For example, the fundamental tenet of Indian Classical Music is taal, the rhythm, which is often ignored by the teachers when it comes teaching. Students feel bewildered as they learn compositions but unable to render them in accordance with the taal. One of the primary reasons is that are not told the basics of rhythm or the adjustment of notes in accordance with it. Therefore, the result is that even after years of training they find themselves hesitant when it comes to performance on stage. They even succumb to the various different patterns played by the Tabla player and finally give up the training altogether.

I Will Always Love You My Favorite Singer

Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston arrived on this planet in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick, the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin. She could hardly have had a better passport into the world of music. She started with the blessings of a revered sisterhood, with their belief in her and assistance, but all that would have been so much dross without The Voice, the voice that gave her the world and all its glittering prizes.

Whitney is the first female artist to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at number one (her second album, Whitney, 1987); and the only artist with seven consecutive multiplatinum albums (Whitney Houston, Whitney, I'm Your Baby Tonight, The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale, and The Preacher's Wife soundtracks and My Love Is Your Love ).

From her first two albums and beyond, Whitney Houston became one of the most successful female singers of all time. She has won seven Grammy Awards and been nominated 26 times.

She knew what we wanted knew what we needed and she delivered it to us with a dance beat that took us beyond care and worry, to a divine moment with the one we cared for and in whose eyes we glimpsed forever. And so it should have gone on until she met the quintessential bad boy, every mother's nightmare, every good girl's secret dream, the man who asked for everything, demanded everything... and with each thrilling step changed everything to the point of devastation, despair, degradation. And at last she understood what fulfillment meant and its terrible costs.

Now her pain is over, but The Voice, her great gift from God, abides leaving us the best of her, every soaring note a eulogy for the lady who loved not wisely, but too well.

Enjoying Free Online Classical Music Is Easy

The advent of the internet has created hitherto unimagined changes in many aspects of society, especially on the commercial front. One of the areas where the effect of the internet was more vibrant, and controversial too, was the music industry. The facility to convert recorded music into easy-to-transfer computer file formats has created a sort of anarchy in sharing of music over the internet. A particular software package called Napster caused a stirring controversy, which pitted the giants in the music distribution industry like Sony and BMG against the creators of the software. These companies argued that Napster in effect enabled users to create pirated versions of their branded music releases. The case was solved later. Napster is no longer in use. But sharing of music files remained one of the most common activities over the internet.

For too long, classical music has been regarded as the domain of instrumentalists, composers, academic musicologists and, typically, anyone over 40 years old. But while the majority of today's youth would rather listen to Britney Spears' greatest hits or watch My Chemical Romance on MTV, the view that young people are completely uninterested in classical music is not just erroneous - it's simply not grounded in historical reality.

There are plenty of websites that provide all kinds of songs and music for free, including free online classical music. One can easily find several of such websites by using a search engine like Google. By searching with a simple keyword like "free music download," one can access a number of websites that provide a gold mine of songs and other kinds of music.

Each website works in different way. Some websites allow the users to download a particular music files to the computer of the user. The file stays in the computer of the user. This activity sometimes violates copyright issues. So, a majority of websites allow the user to play and hear the music. The user will need continuous internet connection. Once the internet connection is disrupted, the playing of the music will stop.

Another source of free online classical music is web radios. There are a good number of online radio stations. Some of which are free to use. Some radio stations give prominence to classical music. The advantage of radio stations is that the listeners will get a chance to enrich their knowledge about the music and a golden opportunity to hear previously unheard music.

Since a majority of the classical music files are beyond the copyright jurisdiction, one can safely download the classical music files into the computer. While searching for free online classical music, it is better to be specific about the geography of the music. By simply searching for classical music, you are likely to reach the cyber shores of Western classical music that contain the timeless works of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and the like. If you want eastern classical variety, it is better to be specific about it. Or if you want Indian classical music or classical Hungarian opera music, you are unlikely to reach the desired destination unless you search using specific and accurate keywords.

Indian Classical Music Provides A Particularly Important Role

Indian music has developed through very complex interactions between different people of different races and cultures over several thousand years including the Vedic chant tradition dating back to approx. one millennia BCE, the equally ancient Persian tradition of Musiqi-e assil, and also the existent folk traditions prevalent in the region. However, references to music in ancient texts, aesthetic formulations, and depictions and written discussions of musical instruments offer clues to the Indian music history.

Indian classical music allows for a much greater degree of "personalization" of the performance. Thus they do not represent mind of the composer but a universal idea of the world. They transmit not personal but impersonal emotion.A difference with the western classical music is that Indian music is monodic, not polyphonic. Hindustani (North Indian) ragas are assigned to specific times of the day (or night) and to specific seasons. Many ragas share the same scale, and many ragas share the same melodic theme.

For most historical eras and styles, surviving treatises explaining musical scales and modes provide a particularly important means of recapturing at least a suggestion of the music of former times. Tracing the musical theory of the past makes clear the position of the present musical system.

Khayal literally means imagination, thought or fancy. Khayal is that vocal genre of all North Indian vocal styles which gives its performers the greatest opportunity and also the greatest challenge to display the depth and breadth of their musical knowledge and skills. Khayal has dominated the performing art for past 150 years. Khayal is the genre of improvisational music, and hence it is the study of artist's creative individuality and ability to render a unique khayal at each performance. Despite the presumed freedom in khayal singing, it is structured upon three main characteristics: (i) the raga (melodic mode), the taal (meter) and the cheez (composition), (ii) the types of improvisation which are acceptable for khayal such as alap, taan, boltaan, sargam and nom-tom, and (iii) the placement of these material for creation of aesthetically and technically balanced performance. Khayal is not only a distinguished, richly evolved improvisational music genre, but also a study of cultural history of India since thirteenth century onwards.

Legend, scattered commentary, and speculations suggest that khayal originated with Amir Khusrau (1251-1326). Born in North India, Amir Khusrau was a poet as well as a composer and a great musician of his time. He enjoyed importance at the courts of the Khilji rulers in Delhi. Khayal's origin may have been attributed to Khusrau because of the rapid fusion of Perso-Arabic and Indic musical systems during his lifetime. After Khusrau, the next prominent figures in the history of khayal are the sultans of Jaunpur - Muhammad Sharqui (1401-40) and Hussain Sharqui (ruled 1458-99), who were contemporaries of Babur, the first Mughal ruler in India. The precise role of the Sharqui sultans with respect to khayal is unclear; some scholars suggest a patronage role for them. Most historians are of the opinion that neither Amir Khusrau nor any of the Sharqui sultans was the innovator of khayal, but that khayal was an outcome of the gradual process of evolution that was at work during an era of Indo-Persian amalgamation.

For khayal, the first musical evidence of court support is noted at the Delhi darbar (court) of the eighteenth century Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah Rangile (ruled 1720-48), where the musicians Nyamat Khan (Sadarang) and Firoz Khan (Adarang) composed songs that have been transmitted to the present time. It is believed that Sadarang and Adarang also formalized the structure of modern day khayal. As khayal continued to evolve in the courts throughout North India, distinct performing styles emerged into different gharanas. Three major khayal gharanas carrying the names of the princely states in which they were originally fostered, are Gwalior, Rampur (Sahaswan) and Patiala. Later Agra, Kirana and Jaipur gharanas also became prominent centers of khayal singing. Today this style of classical vocal music is even adopted by some of the instrumental gharanas such as Ithawa. Throughout most of its existence khayal has always been the music of elite patrons. Only in the twentieth century has any other group attained significant involvement in khayal.

Important Benefits Of Classical Music For Your Children

For years, we've known that listening to music has benefits for children's development. CD series like those from Baby Einstein have become extremely popular with parents of babies because experts have recognized that listening to classical music is not only engaging to very young children but actually increases their brain's ability to perform spatial reasoning.

Children may have different thoughts and perspectives compared to adults when it comes to appreciating music. Some children may appreciate classical music readily, while there are others who will not like it. However, if you want to introduce music to your child and want him/her to appreciate it, there are ways that you can do so.

We have long known about the ability of classical music to provide pleasure and stir up deep emotions. Undoubtedly, music has a powerful impact on the brain. Studies have shown that classical music can also help children with special needs through a variety of significant improvements including reduced stress, increased IQ, and improved ability to concentrate. Further, music can make children feel more positive and improve their creative thinking. The bottom line is that classical music can make a huge difference in the lives of those with disorders like autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADD and ADHD and mental retardation.

When a baby is born, he has billions of brain cells. As the baby develops, those brain cells form connections with other brain cells. When babies listen to music, especially classical music, they make strong music related connections in the brain. Over time, continued listening to classical music actually changes the way the child's mind works by creating brain pathways that would not have been there otherwise. Listening to music does not increase IQ, per se, but can make the mind perform many important tasks more easily and with greater skill.

Listening to music has been shown to prime our brains for spatial tasks, like putting together puzzles. Even adults who did not listen to music regularly as a child can experience a short-term burst in spatial capabilities after listening to music.

Why Classical Music?
Classical music has been shown to have the most impact on creating brain connections in children because of the complexity of the music. Classical music has a very complex musical structure. Studies have shown that babies as young as three months old can detect the special structures in works such as those of Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, and can recognize music they've heard before.

It is this complexity that leads researchers to believe that classical music is the best music for building these pathways in the brain. However, all music is good for the brain. Research has also shown that children who have early and frequent exposure to music are better at math, emphasizing the relationship between pathways built by listening to music and the brain's function.

Special Benefits to Children with Special Needs
We're fully aware of music's benefits to all children. But, researchers are becoming more and more aware of potential additional benefits to children with learning disorders like Down's syndrome, Autism and other learning disabilities.

Children with Autism
Autism is a neurological disorder that affects socialization and communication. It is a spectrum disorder that affects roughly 0.6 percent of the population, occurring four times more often in males.

There has long been a connection between autism and music. Autistic children, though deficient in language, are generally able to process music as well as children their age who do not suffer from a learning disability. This often makes music of special interest to autistic children, and there have been many case studies regarding autistic children who are musical savants.

In very practical terms, many parents of autistic children have found that listening to classical music can calm and soothe their children during bouts of acting out. Like repetitive motions, such as swinging and rocking, music can sometimes also be used to prevent outbursts by helping children to calm in advance of a potentially stressful situation. Classical music has been shown to actually calm the nervous system.

Children with Down Syndrome
One of the most important therapies for Down syndrome children is auditory therapy. Down syndrome children have great difficulty in auditory vocal processing. They have trouble learning to coordinate the movements of the lips and tongue that are required for speech. In addition, they are highly prone to ear infections, which often lead to hearing loss. When children suffer hearing loss, it further impacts their ability to speak.

Music is a key element of the auditory therapy needed by Down syndrome children. Most music therapists use classical music in auditory therapy because of how it stimulates the brain and calms the nervous system at the same time. In addition to how classical music can help improve cognitive function, it helps improve auditory function, which is of special concern to these children. Children with Down syndrome can actually improve their ability to respond to the full range of sound frequencies through sound therapy using classical music.

Other Learning Disabilities
There are studies to indicate that classical music provides benefit to all children because of its ability to create pathways in the brain, stimulate the brain and calm the nervous system. These features are particularly important to children with any sort of learning disability. Improved ability to focus, concentrate and remain calm are positive affects for children with hyperactivity disorders, Asperger's syndrome and ADD. In addition, the stimulation of the brain and creation of new pathways may help these children to improve their ability to perform certain tasks, especially spatially related tasks.

Discover Chinese Classical Music

Guqin has been frequently referred to as the preferred instrument of the sages and literati. For instance, Confucius (551 – 479 BC) was a great master of this instrument. Another notable great master is Ji Kong (223–262) who is one of the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove".Qin is seven-stringed zither without bridges, the most classical Chinese instrument with over 3000 years of history. It is literally called qin yet commonly known as "guqin" (, where "gu" stands for ancient), whereas the qin has become a generic name for all string instruments today.

Guqin has the most well-documented history and best preserved repertoire among all the intruments from China. There are a lot of literatures around guqin, and the information about the guqin is plenty.

To learn to play qin used to be regarded as a very important element for education for the purpose of enriching the heart and elevating human spirit or spirituel communication (to associate with the values and attitude of the past sages). In Imperial China’s past, monks, scholars and ladies of the elite society were supposed to master the four traditional arts, namely, qin, qi, shu and hua

Being on top of the four traditional arts, the guqin has historically been regarded as one of the most important symbols of Chinese high culture. Unfortunately only small number of people in China could play the instrument, because classical musical education of this kind has never really reached general public. The situation for today has not been improved much until recently.

Due to this reason, a lot of ancient repertoire was lost with the pass-away of masters or the written scores were burned or destroyed in war or social turmoil. The situation for the Chinese lute pipa was similar. However, the guqin repertoire has been much better preserved than all other instruments. Since November 2003, Guqin has been registered as one of the master pieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of the humanity by the United Nations' Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO).
There's a lot of talk these days about reinventing Chinese classical music. Or maybe just reinventing its marketing, but in any case doing something to make it come alive.

There's been some action, too. TheFoundation will be holding on Dec. 12 an English lecture on Chinese classical music, featuring a short introduction to the history of Chinese music, a classical ensemble performance, a Q&A session and a demonstration on how to play traditional Chinese instruments.

The concert is an annual activity of the Nancy Huang Foundation established in 1992 by Nancy Yu Huang and her husband Y. P. Huang — the founders of The China Post.

The Popular Modern Classical Music

Now we often want to listen to some inside the much more well-known music, would you already know classical tracks much more flavor? every one of us usually associate classical tracks with sophistication, specialized expertise and expression, all of that are true.

Classical music in strict terms is music that was written and composed during a very specific time period. This time period is 1750 to 1820. What is it that sets this particular period apart from the Baroque period which comes right before or the Romantic which is the period right after? These are not just random dates that some forgotten historian chose, but rather refer to the actual way that the music was composed.
In literature, there are a number of recognized styles of writing. A limerick or a Haiku are both poems, and yet each one has a very strict format and layout. This same principle applies to music. Pieces written during the classical period have a very distinct structure and layout as well. A person who has classical music training can recognize the differences between pieces in the same way that a person schooled in literature can tell you the exact difference between an English sonnet and an Italian one.

So what happens when you have a piece of music that follows this exact format, but was written during a later period? Do you call it a piece of classical music, or maybe, a modern classical piece?

One of the latest trends in the world of video gaming is to have background music that is written in the classical style. These are not simple tunes, these are pieces that are written to be preformed and played by an entire orchestra. The people who are composing the music are those that have been educated in the field of music and are following the format of the classic composition. The creators of these pieces are not only wonderful writers, they are often musicians themselves.

A spin-off of this trend is a change in the productions being held in theatres and auditoriums all around the globe. People are flocking to these places to go and see concerts that are played by the orchestras. These productions are much more than a listening experience. Many of the productions involve huge screens with videos and lights. One special tour even permitted audience participation. Select members of the audience were given the chance to show off their gaming skills against others on the big screens while the entire audience watched and cheered. Prizes awarded to the best gamers at each performance.

The modern classical piece may not be exactly what Beethoven had in mind when he was writing his great works, but you can imagine what he would have been able to do with all the new resources and advancements. Who knows, he might have written his twentieth symphony as an elf battle theme.

How To Sing Classical Music

To learn how to sing classical music involves hard work, patience, repertoire of skills, and commitment. Beginners and even professionals have to develop their voices through systematic and careful practice of vocal exercises and songs.
One of the striking features of classical singing is the disciplined posture of the singers. In general, good posture in singing ultimately improves overall health by improving blood circulation. On the other hand, the importance of good posture to singing lies in preventing stress of the muscles of the body to sustain the whole performance with enthusiasm, energy and power.

Here are the components of good singing posture. Have your feet slightly apart, keep your legs straight, but make sure that your knees are unlocked, have your hips facing straight forward, your abdomen flat, spine aligned, shoulders down and back, and your head facing straight forward.

Next, a good thing about warm up exercises include extending your vocal range, lining up the voice vertically and horizontally, acquiring vocal techniques, control dynamics, singing wide intervals, thrills, and correcting vocal faults. Start to master your breathe support. There are three stages in breathing: breathing in period, breathing out period, and recovery period. A good singing instructor can teach you these elements of breathing.

To give you an example exercise, you may try these healthy techniques to be practiced regularly about articulatory movement of using your mouth and shape the sounds.
Try to soften your voice and whisper to give it a breathy feel. Then, practice a catsmeow as well as a growl sound.
Experiment with the mouth shapes, tongue placement, and lowering and raising the larynx when singing a phrase.
Try to project the voice outwards and forwards and visualize the note as it reaches the back of the room.
This exercise places importance on how you sound during the exercise and not the tune you used on this exercise.
In classical singing, when it comes to expression, the deep emotion of the song has to be translated into your voice. This is where learning the foreign language becomes a challenge for classical singers in order to sing the song in which the expression makes it real and alive for the listeners.
Either you would enter a foreign language school, keep a dictionary for your reference or learn the language on your own, what's important is how you understand what you have been singing and are able to relate the message to your large audience.
To have emotion in singing, you can practice speaking the lyrics out loud as if you are talking to your friend, if it is a love song, read it to your loved one. You can appear natural on stage with your emotions if you can effectively relate to the song and sing it from the bottom of your heart.

Classical Music Review

To be honest, it is not the best work by Glass (below) I have ever heard, even though it dates from 2002 and is mature Glass that has its appeal. But because the opera has never been recorded or put on DVD or film, it is a terrific choice to stage to mark the composer’s 75thbirthday, which happens to be today—coincidentally, the same day as the hotly contested Florida Republican primary.
Plus, it is the Madison Opera’s first foray into Glass, or into minimalist Opera for that matter – a brave move that deserves to be praised and repeated perhaps with other Glass works or maybe something by John Adams.
But that is just one way in which this production of “Galileo,” which I saw Sunday afternoon, has proved timely.

It also was a success in that it marked four successive years of sold-out mid-winter performances for operas done in smaller venues of the Overture Center like The Playhouse and Promenade Hall. Previously, the Madison Opera staged Aaron Copland’s “The Tender Land,” Benjamin Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” (below) andKurt Weill‘s “Threepenny Opera.”
Clearly, there is a market for the smaller, less common works. It would seem these smaller and more experimental winter productions are here to stay, and I applaud that heartily. I can’t wait to see what the next season brings.

There Is A Huge Strength Of Classical Music In Britain

There is a huge strength of classical music in Britain, and the city of London has more world-famous symphony orchestras than any other city across the globe. The Barbican Centre, the Southbank Centre and Royal Albert Hall feature a non-stop, year-round bursting schedule of classical concerts, which attract thousands of visitors. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Royal Opera House Orchestra, crack "period", chamber and contemporary orchestras compete with The Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra for acclaim from audiences and music reviews.
Outside of the capital, there is still a great strength of classical music, and orchestras and music societies have been established in the likes of Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool for as long as in London. The depth and internationalism of musical life reflects the development of the British classical tradition as European, but with specific slants of its own. Top Russian musicians are attracted to play in London venues every year, and it has become the world's leading showcase for international performance.
After outstanding early English church composers such as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, developed the use of massed choral voices to stirring effect, the vocal tradition has arguably become British classical music's glory. Tudor monarchs Henry VIII and Elizabeth I took a lively interest in musical entertainment, although the vocal tradition was boosted in 1710 when the German composer Handel moved to live in London. A boom in opera, choral and instrumental music for the next 35 years was generated by Handel's move and there was an explosion of classical music organisations and concert halls in the Victorian era. Because of this, a wealth of top European composers such as Mozart, Chopin and Mahler visited the capital.
The excitement of Beethoven's music and its enormous technical demands, prompted the setting up of the Philharmonic Society in 1813, followed by the Royal Academy of Music in 1822. A number of major cities across the UK including Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh established major orchestras. The best of world chamber music was shown off in the Wigmore Hall, then the Bechstein Hall, which was built in 1899 just off London's Oxford Street. Other key concert halls were built in London for large-scale symphonic performance like the Royal Albert Hall and Queen's Hall.
Amid a rapid increase in conservatoires and orchestras, the Proms were launched by Sir Henry Wood in 1895. Edward Elgar was the first internationally renowned British composer and headed the boom period, which produced a host of English late-Victorian and Edwardian composers. In the 20th century, a new "English" classical style of a more pastoral type arose, with Vaughan Williams, Delius and Grainger the leading lights, while Noel Coward and Ivor Novello led the world in sophisticated light-classical musical composition.
Classical music was taken to the masses when the BBC made the decision to take over the Proms in 1931 and the organisation went on to found its own broadcasting orchestra and classical radio station (now Radio 3). There was at least widespread access to great classical music, live and recorded given to the general public.

You Should Know Is A Clear Definition Of What Is Classical Music

It could take a lifetime to study and learn about classical music. However, you can easily learn a few basic things that will enhance your understanding of classical music.
The very first thing that you should know is a clear definition of what is classical music. In strict terms, classical music is defined by a period rather than a style. The classical music era is generally considered to be the period between 1750 and 1820. This period was preceded by the Baroque period and it was followed by the Romantic era.
Loosely applied the term is used to define any kind of music that was written or composed prior to 1900. There are some people who seem to think that the term also encompasses any piece of music that is written specifically for an orchestra. A piece of music that does not fall into the category of pop, jazz, rock etc. and involves the use of violins, flutes and horns is a classical piece.
To understand classical music you have to realize that the orchestra itself was and is a work in progress. The orchestra that we see today is different from the orchestra of this time period. In the 1700's the orchestra was much smaller and had fewer types of instruments.
A prime example of this is the percussion section. In an orchestra today, there can be more than 15 different instruments in this one section. They range from chimes to xylophones whereas in the orchestras of the classical era there were only the timpani drums. Not only were there fewer instruments in the classical orchestra, there were fewer musicians. An orchestra today might have as many as sixteen violinists whereas the old orchestra, at a major production, would only have six.
Music preformed and composed during this period played a major part of people's lives. With virtually no other forms of entertainment, music became a focal point of the culture. People would go to see productions and "concerts" regularly. The nobility often had "in house" musicians. Composers were on the staff of the household in the same way that a maid or butler would be. These musicians were not only expected to play, but to be able to compose new pieces to keep the nobility and their guests entertained as well.
As an in house musician, a composer would be forced to churn out works at an incredible speed to ensure that his sponsor and his guests did not become bored. This position also meant that many of the pieces that a person would write would not just be for an orchestra or for a single musician. The composers would write music that could be played in the home of their sponsor, hence chamber music.
